About

This website exists because of one figure, one radiator, and ¥14,800 we would very much like to have back.

A few years ago we imported a “rare” Luffy from a listing that looked flawless. What turned up was Luffy — technically — if Luffy had been sculpted by someone working entirely from a verbal description, then gently warmed. He had that unmistakable bootleg serenity: the calm of a figure who knows, deep down, that he will never appear on the box he came in. We stared at his slightly melted little face for a long time. Then we got annoyed. Then we got obsessed. Then we built this.

Our one rule: nobody else gets gremlin’d

Japan Collectible Guide is an independent English-language guide to authentic Japanese figures, trading cards, Gunpla and Japan-exclusive merch — and, more importantly, to not getting burned buying them. We are the friend who grabs your wrist before you click “buy” on the suspiciously cheap one.

Our sworn enemy: the zombie “Best of 2019” list

The internet is full of anime-figure articles that ranked once, in a golden age, and then died — yet still shamble up the search results recommending things that sold out during a previous console generation, still cheerfully earning commission on links that lead to a 404 and a shrug. We find this genuinely rude. So we do the unglamorous thing almost nobody bothers with: we check whether each pick is actually orderable from Japan right now, we stamp the date we checked it, and a small robot re-checks the whole list on a schedule and quietly buries anything that has sold out. Freshness is our entire personality.

The boring-but-load-bearing part

Who “we” are

An independent guide, run out of an apartment that is slowly being annexed, box by box, by international shipping cardboard. We are not a shop. We are not affiliated with Bandai (they have not called). We just happen to think that if you’re going to import a small plastic pirate from the other side of the planet, he should at least arrive with the face he was promised.
