Luffy's Devil Fruit was never really the Gum-Gum Fruit. Here's what Gear 5 and the Sun God Nika actually are, why the World Government hid it, and what it means for the story.
This is one of the rare One Piece mysteries the series has actually paid off, so most of what follows is confirmed rather than guessed — we'll mark the few open questions as theories.
For most of the series, Luffy's power looked simple: he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit and turned to rubber. The Wano arc rewrote that. His fruit is really the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika — a mythical Zoan tied to a legendary figure called the Sun God Nika. Gear 5 is its awakening.
What Nika actually is
Nika is described as a mythical 'warrior of liberation' who freed people and made them laugh even in the darkest times. In Gear 5, Luffy fights with that spirit made literal — cartoonish freedom, rubber physics applied to the whole world around him, and a permanent grin. The power's core idea is joy and liberation, not just stretching.
Why the World Government hid the fruit
The Five Elders deliberately renamed the fruit the 'Gum-Gum Fruit' and spent centuries trying to capture it before it could awaken. A power themed on liberation is, by definition, a threat to the world's rulers — which is why they feared it becoming 'the most ridiculous power in the world' in the wrong hands.
The Joy Boy connection
When Luffy awakened Gear 5, the ancient elephant Zunesha declared that Joy Boy had returned. That ties Nika directly to the Void Century figure Joy Boy and to the whole endgame — strongly implying the original Joy Boy also carried this power. (See our Joy Boy explainer.)
