Where to Start with Gunpla: A Beginner’s Roadmap

New to Gunpla? Here’s a practical roadmap — which grade to start with, what tools help, and how to build up your skills.

7 min read Independent guide

Gunpla is one of the most beginner-friendly hobbies in the collectibles world, but the sheer number of kits can be intimidating. This roadmap focuses on the process, not specific products — see our guide on grades (HG, RG, MG, PG, SD) for the background.

Step 1: Start with an Entry Grade or High Grade kit

Most builders recommend beginning with an Entry Grade or High Grade (1/144) kit. They snap together without glue, don’t require painting to look good, and teach the basics quickly.

Step 2: Get a few basic tools

  • A dedicated nipper/side cutter for clean part removal.
  • A hobby knife or file to tidy up nub marks left on the plastic.
  • Optional: panel-line markers to add definition without full painting.

Step 3: Learn nub cleanup and panel lining

Two simple skills — removing parts cleanly and applying panel lines — dramatically improve results. Neither requires an airbrush or advanced setup.

Step 4: Move up when you’re ready

Once you enjoy the process, try a Real Grade for detail in a small size, or a Master Grade (1/100) for an inner frame and longer build. Perfect Grade kits are a serious commitment best saved for later.

Gunpla grades are consistent across Gundam series, so the skills you learn transfer to any kit you choose next.
